No fetters could tie her down

No fetters could tie her down
She is unable to do anything with her hands since her birth. But it could never stop Arifa Akhter from pursuing her dreams. Defying all predicaments, the indomitable Lalmonirhat girl sat for her Secondary School Certificate (SSC) examinations today. She became the subject of curiosity as she started writing with her legs. The Daily Star met the 16-year-old student of Fulgach High School at an examination hall at Lalmonirhat Boys’ High School centre. She is appearing in the exams from humanities group. Because of this physical limitation, teachers at her exam centre today allowed her 25 additional minutes to complete her answers. Born in Shahitari village of Lalmonirhat Sadar upazila, Arifa became accustomed with doing all sorts of works including household chores with her feet. Her father Abdul Ali, 64, and mother Mamtaz Begum, 57, are always extending support to their youngest daughter to realise her dreams. “She always shows a high interest in education,” said the mother. She helps Arifa bathe, have her meal and dress. “She herself does the rest,” Mamtaz Begum said. “I could never provide the supports she needed but she never asked for it either. I have been trying my level best to give my daughter higher education,” said Ali, a day labourer who earns Tk 200 daily. “I know how to write well with my right foot, and my left foot aids the right when I write or draw,” Arfia said. Though Arifa was physically challenged by birth, four other her siblings are normal. Arifa’s classmate Mousumi Akhter said Arifa’s writing is better than hers. “She is little slow but she is fine,” she said. Fifth among her siblings, Arifa is among the top brilliant SSC candidates from her school. She got a GPA-5 in Junior School Certificate (JSC) examinations. While at primary school, she was the best student, said Shahjahan Ali, the headmaster of Fulgach High School. Mushfiqur says sorry for defeat

Mushfiqur says sorry for defeat
“I know yesterday’s loss was very painful for you all… But everyone in the team always give all that they have in each match… hence the loss was painful for me and everybody in the team,” a humble Mushfiqur Rahim said in a Facebook post after the Tigers’ sad defeat to India yesterday. “It was not right for me to be out in such a time… Maybe the team lost because of me… In that case I am deeply sorry to all the people of the country. I hope to learn from this and will bring back the smiles on your face,” Mushfiqur added. Everyone who saw yesterday’s match can testify what a rollercoaster ride it was. Mushfiqur’s timely fours in the final over definitely swung the match our way. Yet the night ended in heartbreak and despair for Bangladeshi fans and our little dynamite Mushfiqur Rahim has apologized to the nation for the unprecedented loss. Bangladesh needed two off three balls to win against India and stay alive in the ICC World Twenty20 yesterday and we had Mushfiqur Rahim and Mahmudullah in the crease to bring the game home. They are perhaps the most experienced batsmen that Bangladesh had to stroke those two runs off the last three balls to create a small piece of history at the M Chinnaswamy Stadium in Bangalore. Instead they surrendered three wickets and lost the match by one run to bring about widespread dejection in the Bangladesh camp as the home crowd. Strikes Claimed by ISIS Shut Brussels and Shake European Security
BRUSSELS — Bombs packed with nails terrorized Brussels on Tuesday in the deadliest assault on the European heartland since the Islamic State’s attacks on Paris four months ago, hitting the airport and subway system in coordinated strikes that were also claimed by the militant extremist group. The bombings paralyzed Brussels, the headquarters of the European Union and NATO, prompted international travel warnings to avoid Belgium and reverberated across the Atlantic to the United States, where New York and other major cities raised terrorism threat levels. Anxieties intensified about the inability to prevent mass killings at relatively unprotected places. At least 30 people were killed by two blasts at the Brussels airport departure area around 8 a.m. and one in a subway station shortly after 9. The police found at least one other unexploded bomb in a search of a Brussels house hours later. And Europe’s most wanted person suddenly became an unidentified man in a white coat and dark hat seen pushing a luggage cart in an airport surveillance photo taken just before the bombings. Two other men in the photo, each wearing a black glove on his left hand, were identified by Belgian prosecutors as suspected suicide bombers who appeared to have died in the explosions. “To those who have chosen to be the barbaric enemies of liberty, of democracy, of fundamental values, I want to say with the greatest strength that we will remain assembled and united,” the Belgium prime minister, Charles Michel, said at a news conference Tuesday evening, declaring a three-day mourning period.

BUILDING STRENGTH Holy Angels program promotes wellness for residents
Holy Angels program promotes wellness for residents Exercise physiologist Jason Thomas is a new health-care professional at Holy Angels Residential Facility working to help follow the nonprofit’s mission to provide a healthy lifestyle to their residents. “When you talk about the six dimensions of wellness, the physical is only one of them,” Thomas said. “There are also emotional, occupational, spiritual, intellectual and social. We want to make sure we target all of them.” Thomas said most people with disabilities are prone to a sedentary lifestyle. The National Center on Health, Physical Activity and Disability is focused on examining health disparities among adults with disabilities and is trying to help them achieve health benefits through increased participation in physical and social activities. Research indicates the number of disabled individuals is on the rise and that those individuals face a variety of barriers to health promotion and disease prevention programming in comparison to individuals without disabilities. Thomas has been working to establish an exercise wellness program that is inclusive of every person receiving care at Holy Angels, no matter how limited physically they might be. “Basically, what we’ve been lacking is inclusive equipment,” he said. “Most of the stuff we had was recreation-based that was really geared toward those that were more physically and cognitively capable, and left those with more limitations out to the side. Even those who are fairly high-functioning still have physical limitations that will prevent them from exercising at a rate that will have health benefits. They’re not able to walk fast enough to get the cardiovascular speed we need.” Plans include acquiring some specially designed units from SCIFIT, a company that makes an entirely inclusive line for individuals with disabilities. “SCIFIT color-codes the parts based on moving and stationary parts so that individuals know which ones to grab,” Thomas said. “The seats swivel and pivot and have trainer assist so that we can adjust them easily. The SCIFIT total body trainers have leg stabilizers and grip assist for those that can’t grasp the handles. They are just made to deal with all the situations we’re dealing with, even for our cerebral palsy patients. If the legs aren’t capable of doing a lot of the work, the arms can help with some of the range of motion training. It really affords us a much more inclusive environment.” Thomas said Holy Angels is looking for financial support to help with his exercise program. “We want to balance that so we’re looking at trying to find grant funding and private support to get the equipment we need, to the tune of about $50,000. The residents come and see me about 16-20 at a time. I’d really like to have stations so I can get people on the equipment for an extended period and not have to rotate them out as much. Total body trainers are about $7,000 apiece. StepOnes are recumbent steppers, and they’re just under $6,000 apiece.

Crimea ceremonies mark two years since Russian annexation

Russian forces seized control of Crimea after the Moscow-backed Ukrainian president Viktor Yanukovich fled power following months of protests. Russian officials described the unrest as a “coup” which threatened the safety of its ethnic minority (60% of its 2 million-strong population) in Ukraine’s southern Crimea region. Many Russians say Crimea’s annexation rights a historical wrong by Nikita Krushchev. He gave the territory to Ukraine in 1954 before the Soviet Union collapsed. February 2014: troops wearing no insignia, but said to be Russian, appeared in various parts of Crimea March 16: referendum held on peninsula. Organisers (Crimea’s pro-Russian politicians) claim 97% want to join Russia. March 21: Russia’s parliament approved the annexation. http://sh.st/TWXEa SeaWorld killer whales will stop being bred immediately, the theme parks announced Thursday, essentially phasing out the iconic orcas following years of controversy over keeping them in captivity. SeaWorld also announced it would stop using the orcas in theatrical shows in the parks, instead introducing "new, inspiring natural orca encounters," reported The Associated Press. The company appeared to acknowledge that criticism had helped drive the decision to end the breeding program. "As society's understanding of orcas continues to change, SeaWorld is changing with it. By making this the last generation of orcas in our care and reimagining how guests will encounter these beautiful animals, we are fulfilling our mission of providing visitors to our parks with experiences that matter," said Joel Manby, president and chief executive officer of SeaWorld Entertainment, Inc. Idomeni Camp Refugees Plead for Help as EU Leaders Meet on Migrant Crisis

Idomeni Camp Refugees Plead for Help as EU Leaders Meet on Migrant Crisis
IDOMENI, Greece — A Syrian mother stranded with her children in a squalid refugee camp insisted she still had hope of crossing the Greek border as leaders met Thursday in Brussels to discuss the migrant crisis. Fatima Ahmad pleaded for help, saying she and her family are living like animals in the muddy, disease-ridden Idomeni camp that has sprung up next to the closed border crossing between Greece and Macedonia. "We can't live like this," she told NBC News. "We need a room, a home... a warm bed. We need clean food, clean clothes." Ahmad said life in sprawling camp was almost as miserable as the civil war that she fled with her husband and five children. "In Syria we die quickly, but in this place we die slowly," she said, frustrated with the political paralysis that has gripped Europe as nations move to close their borders to the stem the tide of migrants. "We have nothing... just talking, talking, talking. Every government in Europe does nothing for us."
